Abstract
Art
made
by
gay
men
in the
1960s
and
1970s
was
fueled
by the
increasing
confidence
accompanying
homosexual
visibility
in the
wake
of
Stonewall
and,
hence
, was
explicitly
aligned
with the
celebration
of
gay
liberation
.
Later
,
art
made
by
gay
men
began
to
align
itself
with the
politics
of the
AIDS
crisis
. In this
context
,
my
thesis
asks
what
strategies
of
visual
address
, if any, were
successful
after
the
AIDS
crisis
had
turned
from a
medical
emergency
into a
permanent
, but
somewhat
more
treatable
,
disaster
?
Further
, are there
differences
between
art
produced
by
gay
men
before
,
during
, and
after
the
AIDS
crisis
?
Can
there be
“gay”
art
at
all
,
without
AIDS
,
after
the
1980s
?
Is
“AIDS
art”
just
1
an
extension
of
gay
art
? In what
follows
,
I
will
investigate
and
attempt
to
answer
these
questions
through
three
case
studies
stemming
from a
recent
,
pivotal
exhibition
.
